She speaking at a ceremony at the Wesley College in the Ashanti Region said the decision by the erstwhile NDC government to replace the allowance with a loan was to ensure trainees have easy access to money for their upkeep.

The Professor and 2020 Presidential running mate of John Dramani Mahama and Democratic Congress (NDC) said the loans that were granted to teacher trainees at that time were twice the amount that was given to them as allowances.

“I need to emphasize that we never scrapped the teacher trainees allowance. We never took anybody’s money from them. All those who were receiving the teachers’ allowance, received them till it ended

We gave them the loans that were about twice what they were getting as allowances because we thought they needed more,” the immediate past Minister for Education told Kumasi-based Wesley College teacher trainees.

But, on the part of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, he has said the controversial teacher trainees allowance and nursing trainees allowance will not be cancelled despite the delay in the release and payment of the stipends.

The Ministry of Education (MoE) reacting to claims the central government is planning to scrap the trainees’ allowance in a statement copied to EducationWeb said no such decision has been taken by His Excellency Nana Akufo-Addo.

“We wish to place on record that no such decision has been taken by the Ministry of Education or Government of Ghana (GoG). The Ministry or government remains committed to paying trainee allowance,” the Ministry stated.

  1. Your Excellency Mad Vice-Presidential candidate, It is very sad that politics has turned many renowned Professors into lying machines to score political points. Mad Prof, to deceive people with your language, which is just mixing of English words it very dishonest for a renowned Professor to do so You are only using syntax n semantics, in your discourse. If every month you give an allowance of GHC100, which the recipient will not pay at any point in time. Then after some months, you decided to replace it with a loan, which the recipient is to pay back at point in time, how can the two be the same?
