Charles Sr. and June gave birth to the former professional baseball player on January 4, 1944, in Northfork, West Virginia, in the United States. His father was a Pentecostal preacher who, according to reports, had diabetes and heart issues before committing suicide. The 79-year-old, who was once physically fit, guided the Phillies to the 2008 World Series.
He turned down basketball scholarships from the University of Pennsylvania in order to pursue baseball offers from the Pittsburgh Pirates, Detroit Tigers, Minnesota Twins, and New York Yankees. In 1963, he signed with the Minnesota Twins for $30,000 (equal to $290,000 today).
Manuel began his coaching career as a manager in the Minnesota Twins’ farm system in 1983.In 2014, he was inducted into the Phillies Wall of Fame.
