American rapper and the originator of chopped and screwed music Milton Powell, better known as Big Pokey, passed away at 45. Big Pokey was originally from Houston, Texas. He was one of the original members of the Screwed Up Click.

Big Pokey was born on November 29, 1977. He died on June 18, 2023.
In the early 1990s, Big Pokey began his journey as a rapper with Houston producer DJ Screw, rapping on DJ Screw’s mixtapes. The mixtape “June 27th Freestyle” became a hallmark album in coining the chopped and screwed hip hop.
He released his album in early 1999 titled, Hardest Pit in the Litter, followed by another album titled D-Game 2000 that had a sound of mid-tempo 808-driven beats and had his Houston friends as features. Big Pokey and Wreckshop Wolfpack collaborated in 2001 to release Tha Collabo. Big Pokey returned in 2002 with another solo album, Da Sky’s Da Limit. In 2004, a clip of Pokey’s song “Who Dat Talkin Down” was featured in the pilot episode of HBO’s Entourage. In 2005, Pokey was featured on Paul Wall’s track “Sittin’ Sidewayz” which peaked at #93 on US Billboard Hot 100.
Cause of Death
Powell collapsed and lost consciousness while performing at a bar in Beaumont, Texas on June 18, 2023. He was rushed to a hospital, where he died later. His cause of death is not known at the moment of this writing.
