A Florida couple traveling to Port-au-Prince, Haiti, is being held for ransom, according to their family members.

Jean Dickens Toussaint and Abigail Toussaint have reportedly kidnapped onboard a bus while visiting the devastated country to see sick relatives and partake in a village festival on March 18.

Although it has not officially recognized the kidnapping, it has stated that it is “aware of reports of two US citizens missing in Haiti.”

According to their family, Jean-Dickens Toussaint and his wife, Abigail Toussaint, of Tamarac, Florida, were in Haiti to visit sick relatives and attend a neighborhood celebration when they were abducted on a bus from Port-au-Prince on Saturday.

The U.S. Department of State responded to a query regarding the event by stating that it is “aware of reports of two U.S. citizens missing in Haiti,” but it did not officially declare a kidnapping.

According to Christie, the friend who was traveling with the Toussaints informed his family about the ransom requests.

The couple’s release was initially demanded by the captors for $6,000, according to Nikese Toussaint, Jean Dickens Toussaint’s sister, as reported by ABC News.
