The leadership of an Education Think Thank, Africa Education Watch has commended President Nana Akufo-Addo for introducing the Free SHS programme that has seen many BECE graduates to Senior High schools.
According to the Education Watch, if not for the implementation of the popular social intervention, some needy but brilliant students it was busy in 2017 raising funds to enrol in SHS wouldn’t have been in school.
The Education Policy Research and Advocacy Organization in a social media post sighted by Educationweb.com.gh said it at some point had to borrow money to enrol other needy but brilliant students in school.
“History will forever smile at Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for envisioning & actualizing the Free SHS programme. Until 2017, I was always busy raising funds to enrol needy students in SHS; sometimes, I had to borrow to enrol others,” the EduWatch Executive Director stated.
He said amid the increase in the number of poor students resulting in financial difficulties his outfit (Africa Education Watch) had to drop some of the needy students from the school, a situation he said was painful and sad.
“The sad part is those we couldn’t assist; it was painful watching them drop out due to poverty. As the numbers kept increasing over the years, the cross was becoming heavier,” the Director of the Education Think Thank recalled.
According to him, the Akufo-Addo led government Free SHS programme introduced in September 2017 to absorb school fees of all candidates who pass the annual BECE came to rescue the needy but brilliant students.
