Parents of 2021 BECE candidates have been urged to permit their children to at their own interest select Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET courses during the 2021 selection of schools processes.
The Executive Director for COTVET speaking on Angel FM’s ‘Anopa Bofo monitored by Educationweb.com.gh urged parents not to force their wards to select schools like Prempeh College, Presec, Achimota and others.
“Parents should not force the candidates to choose schools like Prempeh College but rather they should encourage their wards interested in technical or vocational education to select TVET schools,” he stated.
Dr Fred Kyei Asamoah in the interview noted technical and vocational training (TVET) is as essential as education in other fields of study such as Business, General Arts and the Sciences.
Commenting on the need for parents to support their wards in that direction, he said the central government has absorbed the fees of TVET schools just like the Senior High Schools under the Free SHS policy.
“We need to uplift TVET to the highest standards if we wish to nip the cycle of unemployment into the bud. A cursory look around shows that we import technicians and experts from abroad to assist our country to achieve all the major nation-building works that require sophisticated skills including road construction.” he told the host of the ‘Anopa Bofo show.
He gave instances that countries such as Germany and Switzerland are now developed amid a strong foundation in TVET, thus, the need for Ghana to equip the youth and the working class with technical and vocational skills.
Dr Fred Kyei Asamoah consequently entreated parents and guardians to assist their ward in the school selection process and allow if interested to choose TVET courses and Senior High Technical Vocational schools.
