The Government of Ghana (GoG) has said it will go ahead and name the Tamale-based University of Development Studies (UDS) after the later former President Jerry John Rawlings despite his refusal when he was alive.
Ghana’s longest-serving head of state while alive did not like to be named after the University of Development Studies (UDS).
But, President Nana Akufo-Addo delivering the tribute of Mr Rawlings at the final funeral rite at the Black Star Square in Accra on Wednesday, 27 January 2021 insisted to honour him with that title despite his reservation.
According to Akufo-Addo, the late former President’s family had agreed to his proposal and that the necessary arrangements will be put in place to name the University of Development Studies (UDS) after Mr Jerry Rawlings.
“Whilst he was with us, he, respectfully, declined an offer I made to him, in 2017, to have the University of Development Studies, Tamale, (UDS), which he, personally, helped establish, named after him
“His reason was that, in adhering to a long-standing principle, he did not want to have any national monument or facility named after him”
His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo disclosed that UDS when named after the former Commander in Chief and the late President, will be called The Jerry John Rawlings University of Development Studies.
“I am glad that this has found favour with his family, and the necessary formalities will be carried out to achieve this, i.e. The Jerry John Rawlings University of Development Studies, Tamale,” Akufo-Addo said
