Virginia Tech, formally Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, is a public land-grant research university with its main campus in Blacksburg, Virginia. It also has educational facilities in six regions statewide, a research center in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, and a study-abroad site in Riva San Vitale, Switzerland. Through its Corps of Cadets ROTC program, Virginia Tech is a senior military college.

Virginia Tech offers 280 undergraduate and graduate degree programs to some 34,400 students; as of 2015, it was the state’s second-largest public university by enrollment. It is ranked among the top 50 universities in the United States for total research expenditures, top 25 in computer and information sciences, and top 10 in engineering, the latter two of which are the highest rankings in the state, and manages a $522 million research portfolio. It is classified among “R1: Doctoral Universities – Very high research activity”.

Acceptance Rate

Virginia Tech admissions is selective with an acceptance rate of 56% and an early acceptance rate of 64.3%. Half the applicants admitted to Virginia Tech have an SAT score between 1210 and 1410 or an ACT score of 26 and 32.

GPA Requirements

With a GPA of 4.04, Virginia Tech requires you to be at the top of your class. You’ll need nearly straight A’s in all your classes to compete with other applicants. Furthermore, you should be taking hard classes – AP or IB courses – to show that college-level academics is a breeze.
