The Minister for Education, Hon Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum following the enormous contribution of Ghanaian teachers has said the United Kingdom (UK) has expressed interest to employ teachers from Ghana to teach in their country.

Speaking in an interview with Kumasi-based Wontumi FM monitored by EducationWeb Dr Adutwum said the Minister in charge of UK’s education has told him of his intentions to recruit qualified teachers from Ghana.

“Ghana has more teachers than any country in Africa, not long ago I meet the United Kingdom Minister for Education and he is willing to recruit trained teachers from Ghana. We have more teachers unemployed,” Hon Yaw disclosed.

Commenting on the over 16,000 newly trained teachers to be recruited by the Ghana Education Service (GES) before December 31, 2021, Mr Adutwum said his outfit is seeking financial clearance to recruit more teachers in due course.

“We petitioned the Ministry of Finance to increase the number of teachers to be recruited but they told us to recruit the 16,850 for now and later grant the Education Ministry clearance to recruit more teachers into service,” he said.

The Education Minister further disclosed graduate teachers in the next academic year will be recruited adding that newly trained teachers from private Colleges of Education will also be considered for recruitment possibly next year.

“The Ghana Education Service (GES) and Ministry of Education (MoE) is looking forward to recruiting more teachers to help the free Senior High School (Free SHS) and Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET),” Adutwum added.

Finance Ministry November this year granted financial clearance to the Ministry of Education (MoE) for the Director-General of GES to recruit more than 16,000 teachers from the various 46 public Colleges of Education.

“Financial clearance is hereby granted to the Minister for Education to enable the Director-General of Ghana Education Service to recruit sixteen thousand, eight hundred and fifty (16,850) newly trained teachers for the service

Approval is also granted for their emolument to be charged against the compensation of Employees vote of the Ministry of Education in the 2020 budget,” a statement signed by the Deputy Minister for Finance stated.

The Ministry of Finance said the effective date of the appointment should not be earlier than December 1, 2021, adding that the financial clearance granted to the Ministry expires end of December and cannot be used thereafter.
