Ccape-Coast-based public collegiate research university, the University of Cape Coast (UCC) has been adjudged the best university in the country, West Africa and ranked number one globally for research influence for the year 2022.
According to the Times Higher Education (THE), responsible for the World University Rankings, no university in Ghana has ever achieved this position since it commenced the annual rankings approximately two decades ago.
The Cape Coast University (UCC) was ranked number one out of the 138 new entrant universities and among the top 350 universities globally in the 2022 edition of the World University Rankings by Times Higher Education.
Ranked 301-350 globally, The University of Cape Coast popularly known as the University of choice was also named among the top best five universities in Africa and ranked topmost in the Republic of Ghana.
UCC was founded in 1962 to train graduate teachers for second cycle institutions such as teacher training colleges and technical institutions, a mission that the two existing public universities at the time were unequipped to fulfil.
The University of Cape Coast (UCC) has since added to its functions the training of doctors and health care professionals, as well as education planners, administrators, legal professionals, and agriculturalists.
University of Cape Coast graduates include Ministers of State, High Commissioners, CEOs, and Members of Parliament. The university, which is five kilometres west of Cape Coast, is on a hill overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.
It operates on two campuses: the Southern Campus (Old Site) and the Northern Campus (New Site). Two of the most important historical sites in Ghana, Elmina and Cape Coast Castle, are only a few kilometres from the university.
