The Minister in charge of Ghana’s Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum has attributed the 2020 WASSCE excellent performance of the first batch of the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) to the quality of the Free SHS policy.
Dr. Adutwum’s comment comes after the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUTS) described the outstanding performance of prospective Ghanaian candidates who sat for the immediate past WASSCE as a shame to Nigeria.
According to NUTS, Nigeria provided almost 70 per cent of the total candidates who sat for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) but recorded a poor performance.
But, the Education Minister in an interview with United Television (UTV) monitored by Educationweb.com.gh, said the Ghanaians would have failed the 2020 WASSCE if the Free SHS policy is nothing to write home about.
“Nothing bad yields good results, so if the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy is not good, our students wouldn’t have performed that great.”
According to the Educationist, unlike the previous years that Ghana recorded only 30% pass in Mathematics, 65% of Ghanaian candidates who sat for the exams conducted by WAEC passed Mathematics this year.
