Parliament directs GSL to admit 499 pass but ‘failed’ law students

The Parliament of Ghana has ordered the Management of the Ghana School of Law (GSL) to immediately admit some 499 students who sat for this year’s law entrance examination and passed but were failed by the General Legal Council.

Parliament directives come after the students the Council earlier denied admission to study law petitioned the Speaker of the House to investigate the examination results over the mass failure of candidates who wrote the Law test.

“The General Legal Council is hereby directed to admit all 499 LLB students unfairly denied admission to the Ghana School of Law (GSL) in the 2021/2022 academic year,” Parliament said in a release copied to EducationWeb.com.gh

According to the House, the 499 students had 50% cumulatively and met the 50% threshold thus it is unfair for them to be denied admission on the grounds that they could not score 50% each in both sections A and B of the exams.

Parliament criticised the GLC for applying a rule it set after the 2020/2021 entrance exams requiring candidates to pass 50% in each of the two sections, A and B in the examination, a rule that did not exist prior to the examination.

“The unfair treatment being meted out to the 499 applicants contradicts the government’s agenda of doubling tertiary enrolment by 2030 and creating equal opportunities for career progression and skills development,” it stated.

Members of Parliament consequently have urged the Ghana Law School Management to take immediate steps to ensure fairness and transparency in determining the rules of the next entrance examination to be administered.

The 2021 edition of the Ghana School of Law entrance examinations saw 28% of the LLB candidates gain entrance to Ghana’s only institution for training lawyers, 790 out of 2,824 candidates passed the exam conducted earlier this year.
