NTC 18 months after the issuance of license cards to qualified in-service teachers will award non-qualified teachers a temporary license which can be renewed 2 times, the Registrar of the Teaching Council said Monday.
The Registrar, Dr. Christian Addai Poku in an interview monitored by Educationweb.com.gh said short courses will be organized for the non-qualified teachers to enable them to fit for the classroom before the license.
“We will organize short courses to enable them to fit to be in the classroom but they will not be called professional teachers until they upgrade themselves at a teacher training institution,” the NTC official stated.
He said the temporary license which can be renewed 2 times is to enable the non-professional teachers to upgrade themselves at a teacher training institution, sit for the teacher licensure to acquire a full teaching license.
According to him, his outfit by 2025 will phase out all unqualified pre-tertiary public and private school teachers from the various classrooms.
“We have targeted to license all teachers in the country by 2024, but after 2024 the National Teaching Council (NTC) will not hesitate to sack all unlicensed teachers from classrooms,” the NTC Executive Secretary noted.
Dr. Christian added that “for now they shouldn’t panic but they should start taking steps to upgrade themselves at any accredited teacher training university or College of Education in the country and we will license them.”
In a related development, the Teaching Council has extended the registration for license at the Teacher Portal Ghana website to enable all qualified in-service teachers in the country to register for their license.
