NTC reviews teacher licensure test amid College entrance exams

The National Teaching Council (NTC) as part of a review of the teacher licensure test has introduced a new reform to allow Colleges of Education trainees to write only a paper on their field of study, a source told EducationWeb on Friday.

The review of the Ghana teacher licensure examination to enable teacher trainees to sit only a paper on their field of study the source today said is because trainees sat for an entrance examination before being given College admission.

“There have been some new reforms which will allow teacher trainees to write only a paper on the field of study due to the fact trainees would have to write entrance exams before they can be granted admission to enter college,” he said.

Commenting on reports that the Management of the National Teaching Council is planning to exempt public teacher trainees from the national licensure examination, the insider said that is not the current update on the licensure test.

In a related development, the Education Ministry agency (NTC) responsible for licensing newly trained teachers has said it will on April 21 and April 22, 2022, conduct the 8th edition of the Ghana teacher licensure examination (GTLE).

The date for the Ghana teacher licensure examination (GTLE) comes after the Council in a statement to some Colleges of Education requested for their halls to be used as centres for the administration of the forthcoming examination.

“The Management of the National Teaching Council (NTC) humbly requests the use of your institution’s halls for the 2022 Ghana Teacher Licensure Examination (GTLE),” the statement to some Management of public Colleges stated.

The Teaching Council (NTC) earlier projected to commence the conduct of the 2022 teacher licensure examination in March this year but due to circumstances beyond control, the national examination has been slated for April this year.

As the date to administer the first phase of the 2022 academic year licensure examination is out, Dr Christian Addai Poku led National Teaching Council in due course will communicate the date for registration of the GTLE to the public.

The Colleges of Education admission entrance examination, dubbed the Ghana Basic Education Skills Examination Test (GBEST) to access WASSCE graduates on numeracy and literacy has also been slated for August this year.

Registrar of NTC, Mr Addia Poku last month told relevant stakeholders prospective candidates who become successful at the teacher training entrance examination will be granted admission to pursue teacher education at the College.

“The GBEST will, thus, be used as the entry assessment for the trainee teachers and after completion, the students will be made to write a level and subject-based licensure examination to be qualified as professional teachers,” he stated.
