The Executive Secretary for the Commission, Hon. Ofosu Asamoah Tuesday told Asempa 94.7 FM his outfit after the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) take steps to call off the industrial action shall suspend the case.

Describing the ongoing UTAG industrial action as unfortunate, NUGS in a statement copied to EducationWeb today said the sit-down has left university students in a state of dilemma as to whether or not to continue to stay on campus.

“This is unfair to us since being in school comes with an extra cost to parents and guardians. UTAG and government must understand that parents make extra expenses to keep their wards in school and it is unfair the expenses go waste

Students now loiter around university campuses without resumption of academic work anywhere insight. The industrial deadlock between UTAG and the government is happening at a dreadful cost to university students,” the Union stated.

The leadership of the NUGS Tuesday said it is disappointed in the central government and the Teachers Association (UTAG) for their inability to reach a consensus on the matter regarding the conditions of service of the teachers.

“We are entreating both parties not to go into negotiations with a display of ego (powerplay) which may delay the desired outcome of consensus. This we believe will make matters worse if not curb moving forward,” it urged.

To ensure peaceful around the table negotiations, the National Students Union has asked the National Labour Commission (NLC) to withdraw its lawsuit against the University Teachers Association (UTAG).

On the part of the striking Association, the Union has entreated them to immediately suspended the industrial action and return to negotiations for prospective students to commence the academic activity for this academic year.

Meanwhile, a member of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) Professor Yaw Gyampo Monday told Accra-based Citi FM his outfit will only call off the ongoing strike if their concerns are addressed by the government.

Speaking on EyeWitness News, the university lecturer said the Association is prepared to meet the Commission at court saying that the lawsuit is a calculated attempt to force the angry and hungry teachers back to the classroom.

“Teachers are on strike because of their worsening condition of service and you want to use a strike to compel them to classrooms? how do you expect a hungry and angry teacher to teach, is teaching done under duress?” he quizzed.
