MoE denies ‘ongoing’ STEM schools headmasters recruitment

The Deputy Minister for Education, Hon. Reverend John Ntim Fordjour has described misleading and false local media reports indicating the Education Ministry (MoE) has commenced the recruitment of STEM schools headmasters.

His comment comes after the President of the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), Angel Carbonu called on the Ministry to withdraw an advertisement inviting applicants to apply to be heads of the STEM schools.

“They [the STEM schools] are not private schools, these are government schools. The teachers employed in these schools are our members and why I say this, I am being talked about as singing from the NDC hymn book

We have even advocated as unions that MoE and the GES should establish some leadership training institution for the workers of the GES… If they feel we are deficient in the administration and management of schools,” Carbonu stated.

But in a statement copied to EducationWeb, Mr John Ntim Fordjour said his outfit has not advertised for recruitment of headmasters for the soon to be operationalised STEM Schools nor any other public school for that matter.

“The appointment of heads of schools are the prerogative of GES and for the record, it is the understanding of the MoE that GES had not published any such advert as purported by NAGRAT in their press conference,” Hon Ntim stated.

The Assin South Member of Parliament said the appointment of headteachers for the Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) schools soon to be operationalised shall be in line with the prescribed procedure.

Meanwhile, the Minister for Education, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum in an interview last year said the central government before the 20 STEM centres across the country are operationalised will have headmasters to manage the facilities.

“The school in 2022 will start admission but what we are going to do now is to frontload the Management aspect of it thus to recruit headmaster, so in August every STEM school will have a headmaster,” the Education Minister stated.

Headmasters of the STEM centres, the Minister in charge of Education in the country indicated will ensure all the needed equipment including teaching materials are available before the start of academic activities in January 2022.

“Every one of these schools has a science laboratory, ICT laboratory and a library fully stocked with books, so all chemical supplies and equipment for teaching and learning will be ready before the schools reopen,” Adutwum said.
