A report sighted by EducationWeb.com.gh has revealed that teachers of the Ghana Education Service (GES) annual average salary, GHC 24,000 is only 9.6% of Member of Parliaments or Minister’s yearly salary.
According to the report, Ghanaian Member of Parliaments or Minister’s Annual Salary averages GHC 252,000.
For the United Kingdom, the average annual salary for a public primary school teacher in London is £36,900 and the average annual MP salary is £ 81,000. A teacher in the United Kingdom earns approximately 45% of the MP’s salary.
Meanwhile, President Akufo-Addo has said teaching unlike politics is not a profession for one to become a millionaire. He in an interview monitored by EducationWeb.com.gh advised teachers to do other things to get more money.
“Nevertheless I don’t think anywhere in the world that people go into teaching and expect to become millionaires and make money if you want to do that you do other things,” His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa stated.
Mr Kofi Asare, the Executive Director of Africa Education Watch, has similarly urged Ghanaian teachers to leave the classroom to join politics for at least 2 years to become millionaires as suggested by the Nana Akufo-Addo.
