More than seven billion Ghana cedis has been spent on (Free Senior High School) Free SHS project which has seen many students access secondary education for free since 2017, Minister for Education, Yaw Adutwum said on Sunday.
Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum in his address at a press briefing monitored by EducationWeb.com.gh indicated that except for the year 2020, where the global coronavirus pandemic hit the country, all figures he presented are just as they are.
“In 2017, we spent 480 million. In 2018, 1,137,861,816, all in Ghana Cedis. In 2019, 1,682,641,924 and the following year, there will be an adjustment there because of COVID-19 but the actual budget was 2,429,257,748, which would be revised because of the COVID and the academic year changes. And this year, it’s 1,174,021,968,” he stated.
The Bosomtwe Member of Parliament continued that “In all, we have spent to date, GH₵ 7,703,783,456 and that is the data that was given to me by my Chief Director who I trust.”
Asked if the Free SHS project is being managed from the Jubilee House, Dr Yaw Adutwum replied No adding that the Minister for Education is in charge of administrations of the popular initiative through the Free SHS Secretariat.
“So the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) is not run from the Jubilee House as speculated but from the Ministry of Education (MoE) through the Free Senior High School Secretariat,” the teaching Minister noted.
