Minister for Education, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum says the popular Free SHS initiative introduced in 2017 to enable qualified BECE candidates to continue their secondary education for free is not being managed by the Jubilee House.
He disclosed this speaking at a press briefing monitored by EducationWeb.com.gh after he was asked if the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) program is run from the Presidential palace in Accra as widely speculated.
According to Adutwum, the Free SHS initiative is run by the Minister of Education through the Free SHS Secretariat.
“The Free SHS project is not run from the Jubilee House, the Minister for Education is in charge of administrations of the popular initiative through the Free SHS Secretariat,” the Education Minister stated.
Commenting on how much the country has spent on Free SHS since its introduction in September 2017, the Bosomtwe Member of Parliament said “In all, we have spent to date, GH₵ 7,703,783,456.”
“In 2017, we spent 480 million. In 2018, 1,137,861,816, all in Ghana Cedis. In 2019, 1,682,641,924 and the following year, there will be an adjustment there because of COVID-19 but the actual budget was 2,429,257,748, which would be revised because of the COVID and the academic year changes.
