Vice-President of the Republic, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has advised students in Senior High Schools to use their mobile phones for teaching and learning activities and desist from the prolonged use that will not benefit their studies.
Addressing staff and students of Navrongo Senior High School Saturday, Mr Mahamudu said mobile phones and the internet enhance the education of students, thus the reason free Wi-Fi has been provided to all Senior High Schools.
“Let me also admonish students on the use of mobile phones and the internet. Our digital and educational revolution requires the use of these instruments. But, they must never become inseparable companions and distractions to you
“Although the phone has a lot of positives, some students often use them for negative activities and spend more time on the phone to the detriment of their studies. Let us embrace the technological progress for academic excellence.”
He noted the government as part of efforts to improve digitalised education has provided 300,000 laptops to teachers, as well as the provision of free internet WiFi to over 700 Senior High Schools and public tertiary institutions.
“The laptops to teachers will be programmed with school syllabus and textbooks, so that all teachers across the country can electronically access them offline, regardless of where they are in the country,” the Vice-President said.
In a related development, His Excellency the Vice-President has assured Senior High School students the government in due course will give them tablets loaded with course materials to improve their academic performance.
“Our next goal is to provide tablets to the Senior High School (SHS) students and we have started working with publishers of the textbooks to preload all the tablets with required textbooks,” His Excellency stated at an event.
