The Vice-President of Ghana, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has said despite the negative comments from some Ghanaians that Free SHS would compromise the quality of education, 2020 WASSCE results have shamed the critics.
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia speaking at the closing session of the National Chief Imam’s annual Ramadan lectures (Tafsir) in Accra said the Akufo-Addo led government is committed to promoting quality education.
He attributed the excellent performance of the first beneficiaries of the Free SHS also known as Akufo-Addo graduates who sat for the immediate past WASSCE for School to the quality of the Free Senior High School program.
“When the Akufo-Addo government introduced the Free SHS policy, some people opposed it and said quality education would be compromised”
“But the 2020 WASSCE results show that if anything, the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) has improved the quality of education in Ghana,” the Vice President said at the ceremony.
He continued that “WAEC with countries like Sierra Leone, Gambia, Nigeria, Ghana; the results show that of the total number of students who took the exam, there was a total number of 465 who got A in all their 8 subjects”.
“Of the 465 in all these countries, 411 came from Ghana,” he stated.
“Nigeria presented 70% of the total candidates who sat for the 2020 WASSCE, but 411 Ghana claimed 8As and 54 Nigerian students got 8As,”
“That tells you the quality that we have produced. We should not underestimate what we are capable of and we should not underestimate what we are capable of, Free SHS is helping our students and parents”
