Speaking on the TV3 NewDay show monitored by EducationWeb, the NSS official said the central government 2017-2018 used to pay the transport allowance also known as T&T fees to personnel but that is not the case anymore.

“Government do not give National Service a dime for T&T. There was a year I think 2017-2018 where NSS was able to save so much money and we decided to assist service personnel and then it became a cliche,” She told NewDay host.

The NSS Executive Director said aside from the payment of the personnel allowance, the Akufo-Addo-led government has absorbed the cost of the certificate issued to service personnel who completes the one-year mandatory service.

In a related story, the Executive Director of the Scheme, Hon Osei Assibey Antwi says his outfit is reviewing the mandatory one-year national service personnel use to serve the nation after completing public tertiary institutions.

Speaking in an interview monitored by EducationWeb, the immediate past Kumasi Mayor said his outfit in due course will submit a report of their assessment of the NSS Act to the Management of the Scheme for consideration.

“The Act previously mandated service personnel to serve for two years but was later reverted to the one year. We are currently working on a proposal on the year’s personnel to use for national service,” Mr Osei Antwi stated.

The National Service Director indicated the Scheme has studied the national service of about 20 countries including Kenya, Gambia and Namibia and that a final draft within a month time will be submitted to the central government.

As part of the review, Mr Osei Assibey indicated the National Service in the 2023 academic year will become an employable agency to ensure personnel who completed the mandatory one-year service are employed permanently.

The Service Scheme Chief Executive Officer noted that the programmes to be rolled out among others would equip service individuals with the requisite skills to create their enterprises after their national service each year.

“Per our records, only 24% of National Service Personnel reliably find jobs while a whole 76% end up jobless at the end of each service year, so we are using these programmes to work on the numbers to turn the figures around,” he said.
