The suspension of the policy comes after the Teacher Unions Tuesday met with the Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations to discuss measures to be put in place for teachers not to forfeit their salaries amid the national card.

At the meeting, the leadership of the various Teacher Unions suggested for the Controller and Accountant to port the names of public sector workers in their existing databases onto the National Identification Authority (NIA) platform.

They also encouraged government workers including public teachers without the Ghana Card to register with the National Identification Authority immediately before the December 1, 2021 deadline as directed by the Accountant.

To facilitate the process of the registration of public sector employees, the Unions urged the government to set up designated centres for registration of the Ghana Card to ensure all teachers nationwide are duly registered.

The suspended deadline the Controller in a statement copied to EducationWeb.com.gh said forms part of a government effort to deliver speedy, secure and verified payroll services to government employees and pensioners

“This forms part of a government effort to deliver speedy, secure and verified payroll services to government employees and pensioners while reducing the risk of underserving payments or claims,” the Accountant stated.

The Controller Department in collaboration with the National Identification Authority (NIA) indicated the decision is to have a harmonized database to facilitate biometric and unique identification of all workers on the payroll.
