Peter Paul Montgomery Buttigieg is an American politician and former military commander who is the 19th Secretary of Transportation of the United States. He was the 32nd mayor of South Bend, Indiana, from 2012 to 2020, and was a member of the Democratic Party. He acquired the nickname “Mayor Pete” during his tenure.

Pete Buttigieg was born on January 19, 1982, in South Bend, Indiana, to Jennifer Anne (Montgomery) and Joseph Anthony Buttigieg II.
Buttigieg graduated as valedictorian from St. Joseph High School in South Bend in 2000. He took first place in the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum’s Profiles in Courage essay challenge that year. He traveled to Boston to receive the award, where he met Caroline and other members of President John F. Kennedy’s family.
Buttigieg graduated from Harvard College and the University of Oxford, where he received a Rhodes Fellowship. He served as an intelligence officer in the United States Naval Reserve from 2009 to 2017, rising to the rank of lieutenant.
Buttigieg is a Christian, and he has stated that his religion has had a significant impact on his life.
Buttigieg came out as gay in a June 2015 South Bend Tribune article, making him Indiana’s first openly gay elected executive.

Buttigieg revealed his engagement to Chasten Glezman, a junior high school teacher, in a Facebook post on December 14, 2017. They’d been dating since August 2015, when they met through the matchmaking app Hinge. On June 16, 2018, they married in a private service at the Cathedral of St. James.
Buttigieg is the first mayor of South Bend to marry while in office. Chasten goes by Buttigieg, his husband’s surname.
