Mescal was born in Maynooth, County Kildare, to Paul, a teacher who also acted semi-professionally, and Dearbhla, a Garda officer.
Paul played Gaelic football for Kildare’s junior and under-21 teams and belonged to the Maynooth GAA club. Following a jaw injury, he stopped playing the sport.
