Jack Roosevelt Robinson was an American professional baseball player who was the first African American to play in the modern era of Major League Baseball (MLB).

On April 15, 1947, Robinson broke baseball’s color barrier by starting at first base for the Brooklyn Dodgers. The signing of Robinson by the Dodgers signaled the end of racial segregation in professional baseball, which had kept black players in the Negro leagues since the 1880s. In 1962, Robinson received an induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame.
Robinson’s personality, use of nonviolence, and talent challenged the established underpinning of segregation that had characterized many other elements of American society at the time.
He affected culture and made substantial contributions to the civil rights struggle. Robinson was also the first African-American television analyst in Major League Baseball and the first black vice president of a major American firm, Chock Full o’Nuts. He assisted in the establishment of the Freedom National Bank, an African-American-owned financial institution centered in Harlem, New York, in the 1960s.
Robinson was posthumously awarded the Congressional Gold Medal and the Presidential Medal of Freedom after he died in 1972 in appreciation of his achievements on and off the field.

Jackie Robinson lost his 24-year-old son, Jackie Jr., in a car accident a year before his death, which is a terrible loss for any parent.
Robinson’s wife established the Jackie Robinson Foundation after her husband’s death. Jackie Robinson Day is an annual celebration of Robinson’s legacy, as he became Major League Baseball’s first Black player era with his debut for the Brooklyn Dodgers on April 15, 1947.
