Brendan was the youngest of four sons born in Indianapolis, Indiana to Canadian parents Carol Mary and Peter Fraser.

During Fraser’s youth, his family moved frequently, settling in Eureka, California, Washington, Ontario, and Switzerland. He went to Upper Canada College, a boarding institution in Toronto. During a vacation in London, England, he saw his first professional theatrical production in the West End, which sparked his interest in acting.

In 1990, he graduated from Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle. He started his acting career at a small acting school in New York City. He intended to pursue a Master of Fine Arts in Acting at Southern Methodist University, but he detoured in Hollywood and chose to stay to work in film.

Brendan achieved his first major box office hit with the comedy George of the Jungle in 1997, and he won acclaim for his dramatic performance in Gods and Monsters in 1998.
